The Culvert
Places We Meet - Art in Public Spaces
Stavanger, 2025-2027
We are beyond excited to announce the following artists who are participating in the sketch competition for the permanent art project The Culvert as part of ‘Places We Meet – Art in Public Spaces’ in Stavanger:
Bianca Hisse (b.1994, Brazil) is a visual artist and choreographer. Her artistic practice investigates the way places have been choreographed by social and political issues, employing performance as a tool for imagination and resistance.
Lutz-Rainer Müller (b. 1977, Germany) and Stian Ådlandsvik (b. 1981, Norway) have collaborated as an artist duo since the mid-2000s as L + S, or simply Lutz and Stian. Collaboration also constitutes a pivotal point in their sculptural and site-sensitive artistic practice, where they develop both temporary and permanent conceptual interventions.
Marit Benthe Norheim (b.1960, Norway) has roots in Norway, Iran, India, the UK and Denmark. Storytelling and the use of cross-cultural symbols are central to her artistry. The works are characterized by mobility, flexibility, social participation and interdisciplinary collaboration – elements that are all fundamental to her conceptual approach.
Jacob Dahlgren (b. 1970, Sweden) lives and works in Stockholm. Dahlgren’s work is concerned with a dialogue between the authoritative singularity of pure formal abstraction and its position within a variable, complex and social shared culture.
The Culvert is a distinctive transitional space that can be described as a “non-place” – an area one passes through rather than seeks out. Shaped by infrastructure and mobility, such spaces often appear functional but are emotionally and relationally empty. At the same time, the Culvert holds great potential to be activated and infused with new meaning through artistic intervention.
The Culvert is a permanent project alongside The Axis.
