Motvek(s)t

Oslo, May 13 - June 14, 2026

The title Motvek(s)t plays on the double meaning of “degrowth” (motvekst) and “counterweight” (motvekt), referencing the Japanese philosopher Kohei Saito’s notion of degrowth communism. In his recent books – Marx in the Anthropocene: Towards the Idea of Degrowth Communism (2023), Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto (2024) and Slow Down: How Degrowth Communism Can Save the Earth (2025) – Saito outlines visions for a future in which wellbeing, ecology and equality are prioritised over profit. He argues that capitalism’s demand for perpetual growth not only fuels inequality but also destroys the planet – and that only a deliberate reduction in material consumption can shift this trajectory. Against this backdrop, Motvek(s)t asks how we can imagine a more sustainable society – including within the art field – one that is not dependent on growth paradigms.

The exhibition also challenges growth logics through its curatorial approach. Koffi & Højgaard employ embodied curating – a method emphasising rhythm, presence and care – which resists efficiency-driven production and instead prioritises sustainable working processes. This approach requires both artists and curators to reconsider how principles of degrowth and care can also shape artistic production.

Motvek(s)t invites audiences to reflect on new perspectives on economy, work and sustainability. Through spatial design and the combination of diverse practices, the exhibition aims to create experiences that are both visual and bodily. It will function as both an aesthetic encounter and a platform for public discussion, bridging art, research and activism. The exhibition design itself will be part of the mediation, in line with the slow and caring processes the project promotes.

The accompanying programme will include artist talks, conversations with invited experts, curatorial tours and performances throughout the exhibition period, creating opportunities for dialogue and shared reflection.

Motvek(s)t is a group exhibition featuring four artists yet to be announced as well as the location of the exhibition.
